LOST FOAM CASTING

INCLUDING TECHNOLOGIES UNIQUE to SKULD

PATENTS PENDING

Patents pending, hybrid 3D printing process Additive Manufacturing Evaporative Casting

HARDENED DUCTILE IRON

Our patented COEDI material creates high hardness abrasion resistant white iron on selected surfaces of ductile iron.
  • Eliminates the need for heat treatment and expensive alloying and stays hard at higher operating temperatures.  For gears, tooling, and wear parts.

LOW CARBON STEEL IN LOST FOAM

  • Low carbon (down to 0.03%) steel grades in lost foam.

NICKEL ALLOYS IN LOST FOAM

ULTRA-THIN WALLED DUCTILE IRON

  • Ultra-thin walled ductile iron as thin as 1 mm.
  • Ductile iron has higher specific strength than aluminum and most steels, but conventional processes struggle to make it thinner than 4 mm.
  • For lightweighting and helping automotive companies meet CAFE fuel efficiency standards.

CONVENTIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

Skuld also provides conventional lost foam investment casting in aluminum, brass, gray iron, and ductile iron. Additional necessary services such as nondestructive testing, materials testing, anodizing or other coatings, and heat treatment can be provided at partner vendors.
LOST FOAM

A TYPE OF INVESTMENT CASTING

BENEFITS OF LOST FOAM INVESTMENT CASTING

  • Compared to traditional lost wax investment casting, it eliminates most of the process steps.
  • This reduces the process time from 2-3 weeks to less than a day while maintaining similar dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
  • Compared to sand casting, lost foam is 10 times more accurate on tolerances with tolerances of 0.2% (0.002” per inch) possible.
  • It is often net shape requiring zero machining.  Even when machining is needed it is typically for tapped threads or a finish pass on sealing surfaces.
  • Switching from a machined casting to lost foam is faster and cheaper.
  • Lost foam is the most sustainable method to make metal parts.  It recycles scrap to produce brand new components.
  • It uses 27% less energy and has 37% less global warming emissions.
  • Lost foam permits highly complex designs.  Including zero or alternating draft, internal channels, blind holes, as cast threads, and more.
